Boh Tea Plantation Cameron Highlands
Boh Tea Estate Ringlet, Cameron Highlands
Boh Tea is the largest producer of tea in Malaysia, based primarily in Cameron Highlands with three large plantations across Ringlet and Brinchang. The main estate sits at Habu in Ringlet next to its immediate neighbor Fairlie Garden, while Sungai Palas is a sister plantation about 20km away in Brinchang. One of Cameron’s favorite tourist attractions, Boh Tea features a colonial-era tea processing factory open to the public, a shopping gallery, bush walks, and an open-air cafe that serves light snacks and signature tea. Open daily from 9 am to 4.30 pm except for Mondays (closed), the 7km access route to Boh lies about 3km after Ringlet town or 6km before Tanah Rata along the main road.
History of the BOH Tea Plantation at Cameron Highlands
BOH Plantations was founded in 1929 by J.A. Russell, a British businessman during the British colonial era in Malaya. He was optimistic about the tea plantation business due to huge demands despite the worldwide Great Depression at that time. As a result of the potential, he applied for and was granted a concession of land for his first tea garden in Habu, Cameron Highlands.
Noting the mineral-rich soil, high rainfall, and cooling climate of Cameron Highlands, Russell saw the potential for growing tea – high in demand at that time despite an economic depression. He purchased a tract of land in Habu and set out to produce a robust tea with a distinct flavor straight from the ground up. Today, Boh is a successful corporate franchise that is active in local nature conservation efforts, working closely with the Malaysia Nature Society and World Wildlife Fund. At the edge of the valley, a dirt track leads to the wilds of Pos Mensun, a lush rainforest region with occasional Orang Asli (Aborigine) villages that connect to either Bertam Valley or Kuala Terla.
Today, BOH Plantations owns three tea gardens – the first garden in Habu, Fairlie Tea Garden, and Sungai Palas Tea Garden. To ensure the freshness of its tea products, BOH Plantations also set up a packaging factory near its main garden. BOH tea products are distributed both in domestic and international markets.” A source from Wiki.
