How To Select And Store Sweet Corns

A good selection in sorting the white corn will help reap excellent sweet corn health benefits along with beauty benefits. Here are some helpful tips for the right selection and storage:

Selection

  • Never choose the corn with removed husk or the ones that have been in the sun for the whole day.
  • Green husks are not mean the corn is fresh, some types of corn husks after 1 week still green. The most simple way to know whether the corn is fresh or not is to eat it raw.

Storage

  • The best way to store sweet corn is to place it them a refrigerator without removing the husk.
  • You must wrap the corn tightly in a dry plastic bag so as to keep it fresh.

Sweet Corn Usage (Cooking And Eating)

Corn is among the few kinds of cereal that can be cooked and eaten in a variety of ways. You can consume sweet corn right out of the “maize ears” or use the corn kernels in gravy. It is used for cooking fried rice along with onion and chilies to make an amazing snack. Here are some helpful tips on the usage of sweet corn:

Cooking

  • Grill corn with the husk left on. This will help retain the flavor.
  • Don’t put the corn in cold water right after boiling them. This will make your corns soggy.
  • While boiling the corn, make sure to add enough water so that the corn is completely dipped in it.
  • Don’t preserve the corn for long and also avoid over-baking it. Overcooking turns the corn ruby and firm. The cooking time is based on the type of corn, our fruit corn cooking 2 minutes is good enough. Other corns need to cook longer time, 5-10 minutes depending on what type of corn.

Eating

  • Boiled corn cob seasoned with pepper and salt is the most popular recipe. It is a healthy snack and is extremely delicious. Or, you may also consider grilling the corn instead of boiling it.
  • Corn kernels make an amazing, mouth-watering dressing for different soups, curries, and dishes. Moreover, they can also be added to salads for making them an extra healthy snack.
  • Please eat the corn faster after cooking. Don’t wait the corn to cool after cooking, all foods eaten hot are most tasty.

How to Choose and Store Sweet Corn for Maximum Freshness

Sweet corn is a beloved staple in many kitchens, known for its crisp texture and naturally sweet flavor. To enjoy it at its best, it's important to know how to choose and store it properly. Here are some tips to ensure your sweet corn stays fresh and delicious. Choosing the Perfect Sweet Corn Look for Green Husks: When picking sweet corn, start by checking the husks. They should be green color and tightly wrapped around the cob. If you notice any brown or dried-out husks, it's a sign that the corn isn't fresh. Feel for Firm Kernels: Give the corn a gentle squeeze through the husk. The kernels should feel firm and plump. If they’re mushy or shriveled, put that cob back – it’s past its prime. Check the Silk: The silk (those thread-like strands coming out of the top)  should be slightly sticky to the touch and look fresh. Depending on the variety of sweet corn, the color can range from light to dark, so focus more on its condition rather than the specific color. Check for Insects: Look for any small holes or damaged areas on the husk. These could be signs of insect infestation. A clean, undamaged husk is what you’re aiming for. Storing Sweet Corn Refrigerate Immediately: Corn starts to lose its sweetness as soon as it’s picked, so refrigerate it as soon as possible to preserve its flavor. According to the University of Illinois Extension, corn can lose up to 50% of its sugar within 24 hours if not refrigerated. Keep the Husks On: Store the corn with the husks still on. They act as a natural protective barrier and help retain moisture. Reader testimonial: “I’ve always kept the husks on my sweet corn before storing it, and it’s remained fresh and flavorful for several days.” Use a Plastic Bag: Place the ears of corn in a plastic bag to keep them from drying out. Make sure the bag is closed tightly. Freeze for Long-Term Storage:  If you can't use the corn within a few days, remove the…
